Cloud Computing and BIM

“Cloud Computing” is a disruptive technology.  Combined with robust BIM business processes and workflows, cloud computing will be the catalyst for a paradigm shift within the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) sector.

Cloud computing will truly enable Building Information Management (BIM) vs. current BIM applications (such as Revit, Archicad, etc.) which focus
largely upon object-oriented 3D visualization aspects. The latter, while valuable components of BIM represent only a small part of an overall,
integrated BIM solution.  By definition BIM is the life-cycle management of the built environment support by digital
technologies.

Cloud computing enables far more than SaaS Internet-hosted software applications, storage, and processing power.  The levels of collaboration, security, and transparency achievable thru “ground up-designed” cloud computing applications are unmatched by any current technology.

For example, imagine a group of cost estimators around the country… or world… working a project at the same time. Everyone seeing only the
information relevant to their work, but being able to make “real-time” changes, see the latest change and who made it, and undo/redo these modifications on the fly… everyone working on the same cost database, translated into their own language and currency!

Welcome to cloud computing!

  1. Great summary! It’ll be interesting to see if the pace of Cloud Computing adoption outpaces that of BIM adoption. Let’s hope so, although it wouldn’t be much of a challenge. Combining both philosophies would be challenging for most, but those that keep their eye on the prize will truly see SUBSTANTIAL benefits long term IMO.
