A Quick Review/Report on ” BIM 1.0, BIM 2.0, BIM 3.0 “

Dennis Neeley, AIA  gave a presentation at the 2010 AIA National Convention earlier this year.

Here are a few comments and thoughts.

BIM will change the roles, responsibilities, education and training for everyone dealing with the built environment. ” – Let us hope this is true.  The AEC industry can not continue the track record of waste from both economic and environmental perspectives.

“CAD took 12 years to replace hand drawing, BIM will (take) less than half the time.” – Let’s hope so, but will BIM include life-cycle/facility management in that time frame?  What are your thoughts?

The exporting of the BIM model to those that can take advantage of the information is critical.  Many designers are uncomfortable with this step, they need to share their BIM models, it will be demanded by owners. ” – This aspect is critical.  Designer, owners, contractors need to collaborate from day one and share information.  Will it happen?  In the end, owners will dictate the success or failure of BIM.  Your thoughts?

Internal to the architectural and engineering process there are multiple software programs that will lead to better designed and performing buildings. ” – A key point that many overlook.  Cost estimating, project delivery (JOC, SABER, IDIQ…), and other software needs to talk with BIM”

Quantity take-off calculations can be aligned with databases of preliminary costs for labor, material and equipment to quickly calculate anticipated construction costs. ” – Great, but can already be done quickly and easily with e4Clicks Project Estimator and other programs.

“The owner is provided the BIM project for use in operations, facility management and asset management.  The BIM project is constantly maintained for accuracy” – Perhaps the most important aspect of BIM, however, requires the integration of multiple data sources and software programs to accomplish comprehensively.
